The General Sherman is a giant sequoia tree located in Sequoia National Park, California, United States. It is widely considered to be the largest tree in the world by volume, with a height of 275 feet (84 meters) and a diameter of 25 feet (7.7 meters) at the base. The estimated age of the tree is over 2,000 years old.
The General Sherman is named after the American Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman, and it is a popular tourist attraction in Sequoia National Park. Visitors can see the tree by taking a short walk on a paved trail in the Giant Forest area of the park.
The General Sherman is not the tallest tree in the world, as that title belongs to a coast redwood tree in Northern California named Hyperion, which stands at 379.7 feet (115.7 meters) tall. However, in terms of total volume, the General Sherman remains the largest tree known to exist.
